We had the best holiday party we’ve ever had. Each division of players had a full ice parent/friend/player game. The coaches were out having a blast too. Many of our awesome parents brought Christmas cookies and other treats for everyone to enjoy! The Rink bought pizza and soda for everyone and everyone stuffed their faces!

Our Metro teams are off on holidays until practices resume January 9th. We have a new Mite Metro team and we’ve graduated 10 new kids from our Saturday morning Hockey Academy to the Mini Mites! Our hockey program is growing so rapidly we have had to move some practice to make sure our teams all get the proper amount of ice the need. Squirt 2’s practice is moving to Thursday nights at 6:20pm. They will share the ice with the tournament team.

We now have a brand new Mite Tournament Team. They are signed up for Cal State Games along with the Squirt Tournament Piranhas. The Tournament Teams, Squirt and Mite, have 2 shared ice practices scheduled during the holidays. They are Sunday December 29th at 8:50am and Sunday January 5th at 9:30am.

We would like to welcome the newest member to our Squirt Tournament Team Myles Horne! He practiced with the team this past Thursday and he looks great out there. He will be a great addition to the team!

We would like to introduce our new Tournament Mite Team to you! Here are the newest members of our Tournament family!

Anaheim Ducks Event at UTC Ice

It was a great evening at UTC Ice as we hosted the staff of the Anaheim Ducks and USA Hockey at a hockey event right here. The event took place on December 12th. They ran an on and off ice clinic for Peewees, Bantams and Midgets. We had a special NHL Alumni player come to meet and inspire the players who took part. Willie O’Ree the first ever black NHL player met and had photos with everyone. He spoke to the group of kids before they took to the ice saying they can achieve anything if they put their minds to. We had four Piranhas take part. Ryan Nubling, Trebor Zimmerman, Graham and Sam Badger. Way to represent boys!!!

ISI Registration and ISI Competitions

Are you interested in taking your skating a step further? Are you interested in skating in competitions? Becoming a member of the Ice Skating Institute (ISI) is a great way to start! Here at UTC Ice’s Skating Academy, we implement the ISI curriculum and testing requirements into our program. Testing through our Skating Academy, a skater is able to move up to the next level. However, we also offer official ISI testing to registered ISI skaters.

Along with becoming an ISI member, skaters are required to take tests judged by our ISI official at a scheduled time. The standards and requirements for these tests are compared to that of what judges expect at ISI competitions. In passing each level, skaters are given badges to show off their success!

San Diego County holds various competitions throughout the year, including our rink’s competition: Skate by the Sea normally held in August. Kroc Center’s ISI Open is just around the corner on January 20th, 2014 so make sure to stop by and cheer our skaters on!

Follow the link bellow to register as a member and to find out more about ISI:

Your private lesson coach is more than happy to share more information about ISI testing and competitions. Stop by the Box Office today to pick up your Test Registration paper!

Epic Edge

We are excited that all four of our Epic Edge teams will be performing in the UTC Ice Holiday Show. Our ISI team will debut their fun Hawaiian themed program skating to “Pineapple Princess” by Annette Funicello and “Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride” from the Lilo and Stitch Soundtrack.  Come and watch us and all the other great skaters to get into the holiday spirit.

Intermediate Epic Edge competed in the Dr. Richard Porter Synchro Classic in Ann Arbor, Michigan and placed 5th in their group with a clean skate. We are excited to make some changes and improve our scores even more.

Our USFS teams will be travelling to Illinois in the end of January to compete in the 2014 U.S. Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Championships. This competition will qualify Intermediate to go on to Nationals. We wish all teams competing good luck!

Wayne’s World

Wayne’s World started Late 70’s early 80’s, it was a roller team before that. They started on the ice at Mira Mesa but they would change the ice time without letting us know. We would show up and find out at that time 1-1.5 hr delay start time midnight? That’s when we looked for another rink. “HELLO UTC ” 18 + years later still at UTC.
Wayne’s World was the first non pro team from California in a picture display in The Hockey Hall of Fame. We just had to send it in, but it’s still in there! People have come and gone, but the lineup of players always is the same guys. I mix up the teams trying always to make them even. (doesn’t always work out). It’s always fun and the players are a great group of guys with a huge range of back grounds and jobs. All have one thing in common, they like good hockey.
Once you’re in, most guys won’t leave Wayne’s World until they have to. Most of the time it’s because of health reasons. Oh and Wayne started the group way back with a friend of his that now run USA roller hockey. I think Wayne’s World will keep going because there is no reason why not.
