Lots going on at UTC Ice

Matt Smith GM and Youth Hockey Director

Can you believe it is Halloween already! We have lots of exciting things happening at UTC Ice. Our hockey players are having a Halloween themed hockey practice on Friday October 25th! Our Skating Academy Kids are dressing up in their favorite ghost, princess or character costume for classes the week before Halloween and the La Jolla Figure Skating Club is hosting a Halloween party and giving part of the proceeds to our Special Needs Hockey Program!

New Mite Team in January!

Due to the improvement of our Mini Mite players at UTC Ice we are forming another Mite team. As our Mini Mites dominate the other rinks we feel we have to keep our players challenged. To do this we will be moving up the hardest working Minis who we think can “hang” with the bigs kids!

Attention All Mite Parents!!!

We are getting an intermission game during the Ducks vs Leaf game for 12 of our luckiest Mite players! Our coaching staff will be submitting votes for those Mite players who have really shown dedication, sportsmanlike conduct and hard work! We will have a limited amount of tickets for sale for this game. Parents who’s kids are selected for this prestigeous event will have first dibs on purchasing tickets. Voting will be on January 31st and results will be given out the following day. The game is at Honda Center in Anaheim on March 10th 2014 at 7:00pm. We know it is a school night and the kids will be out late, but to play a game with 18,000 fans cheering is something you will not want your child to miss!!! Also 2 lucky kids will get to ride the Zamboni during the intermission resurface!!! How cool is that!!!

We’re looking for goalie gear!

If you know anyone who has out grown or has some old goalie gear lying around not being used we need it! With our programing growing from 3 teams to 6 in January the need for old goalie equipment has never been greater. Add the fact the Mites play half ice there are 4 goalies total on the ice during one game slot. Let me know if you are able to donate some to UTC Ice. Contact Matt Smtih at 858-452-9110 ext 4 or email him at msmith@utcice.com.

Maple Leaf Tickets for Sale

We have a limited number of Ducks vs Maple Leaf tickets for sale in addition the ticket “give away” we are having for our Academy! When I say limited, I mean like 25 tickets. They will be first come first serve and they are $65 per ticket (face value $75). Parents of Mite players selected for the intermission skate will have first dibs and the rest will be sold to our clientele. As always the seats are awesome and they are discounted.  Hopefully we will be getting a few things thrown in like a hot dog and soda, but that is yet to be determined.

Anaheim Ducks vs Boston Bruins Game!

This year we have 150 tickets to the Ducks vs Bruins game. They will go on sale today. Our discounted price is $70 per ticket and includes a lower Plaza Level seat, a meal voucher and an 8.5 x 11 signed photo of Teemu Selanne. They are first come first serve so order your tickets today!

Regianals is one of the 2 qualifying competitions to make it to the National Championships in Boston. Max hopes to get a spot to those nationals. We wish him all the luck in his competitive skating career!

Skater of the Month!

Laura Matista

Laura was born here in San Diego and is 16 years old. She attends school at High Tech High. Laura has a mom and dad, 2 brothers, and a dog, and she says “none of them skate.” Laura began skating at UTC Ice in 5th grade when she was 11 years old. She is now on the Epic Edge Intermediate Team and is working on her intermediate moves in the field test. What Laura likes most about skating is the creativity, artistry, and beauty all wrapped up in one sport. She has a few favorite memories about being on the ice which include, friends taking off her skates on her birthday, getting First place at Sectionals on Pre Juvenile Epic Edge, and qualifying for Nationals on Intermediate Epic Edge. When asked, which famous figure skater do you see as a role model, Laura answered, “The coaches here are famous to us, I look up to them. Also a lot of senior and collegiate teams, they look like they have a lot of fun.” When Laura grows up she would like to do something involving skating or be a math teacher.

Adult Hockey

Mike Duffey Adult Hockey Director

Our new season has started! The Fall/Winter season 2013-14 is in full swing and we are still looking for players in the Bronze Division.  This is a Sunday night league and 3 players are needed (preferable defense) sub goalies are always wanted (must have USA hockey Membership) .The Copper Division a Sunday night league is sold out.  This leads me to believe there is a need for a division 6 league with true beginners . We just need to find  more ice time.  The Monday clinic has proved to produce many beginning players and has the potential to create a beginner league.  Come out and learn new skills and practice your game, Monday night at 6:30 pm. The Gold league plays on Monday and  is our division 2 league. This is a very competitive game with highly skilled players . Our Silver division a Tuesday/Wednesday league is
at 10 teams and Is sold out. It has great team play with players that have the same level of play. Our leagues are currently two season and we are planning to go to a three season league with less breaks in between seasons. We are also looking for a few high level player that can be a sniper around the net for Thursday night platinum league. This Platinum league is fast and fun to watch.  Come out and watch them if you want to see skill level at it’s best. We still have our Sunday 930 am pickup except on holidays.  Ice time is available for rent during the holidays, contact Matt Smith at msmith@utc.com for more information. For premium exposure for your company we have dashboards available for rent for all your advertising needs.

A tribute to the Jaguars and everyone who plays at UTC Ice!

Progress has been made in locker room number 2.  The locker room has been expanded and 3 showers have been installed.  Plans for locker room 3 have been made and when finished will have 3 new showers and other improvements.  Let’s keep
our games good sportsmanship and respect your opponents.

Epic Edge!

The season is going great! We are having a blast preparing for our first competition next month in Anaheim. Our teams not only skate together but we play together too! We are having a team building beach day with a bonfire to let loose and have fun. It will be super fun to hang out with friends and family and just relax. Be sure to check back next month for some fun pictures from our beach day.

If anyone is interested in Epic Edge or wants more information on any of our teams please contact:
