A Rink with Roots
UTC Ice Sports Center has been part of San Diego’s skating culture for generations. Located at the heart of Westfield UTC, the rink has grown alongside the community, evolving from a local mall rink into a year-round home for public skating, hockey, figure skating, and lifelong memories. What’s stayed constant is the focus on welcoming skaters of every age and level.

The Rink Opens
UTC’s ice rink opens inside the brand-new University Towne Center mall as Ice Capades Chalet, becoming one of San Diego’s first mall-based rinks.
1979
A Major Early Milestone
The rink hosts the ISI World Recreational Team Championships, confirming its place as a regional figure skating venue.
1981
“Ice Chalet at UTC” Era
The rink becomes known locally as the Ice Chalet, offering public skating, beginner lessons, and community events.
1980-1990s
Early Hockey Programs Begin
Local skate clubs and hockey groups begin forming regular programs.
1990s
New Ownership: La Jolla Ice Town
The rink is rebranded as La Jolla Ice Town / Ice Town and expands skating and hockey programs.
2000
Travel Hockey & Adult Hockey Expand
Ice Town supports youth development, adult leagues, and early travel teams.
2000s
Alumni players include NHL and elite skaters
Future NHL players start skating, playing on teams, and learning to love the game as kids at UTC Ice Sports Center. Players include Zeev Buium, defenseman, Minnesota Wild; Thatcher Demko, goaltender, Vancouver Canucks; and Chad Ruhwedel, defenseman, Pittsburgh Penguins.
Modern Programs Take Shape
UTC Ice launches refreshed Learn to Skate programs, figure skating academy, and updated hockey programs.
2012-2015
Growing Community Impact
UTC Ice becomes known as the center stone of the mall with year-round programs.
2015-2020
The Piranhas Era & Program Expansion
Youth and adult hockey expand with Piranhas teams, larger leagues, and clinics.
Celebrating 50 Years at UTC Ice

Friendly Note
UTC Ice Sports Center customers can receive validation for a total of 4 hours of free parking. After these 4 hours, parking is charged at $2 for each additional hour, up to a $15 daily maximum.
